Summerlin

Summerlin

A sprawling desert oasis designed around outdoor living and sports.

Summerlin is a luxury master-planned community west of Las Vegas composed of 29 villages carefully designed to blend into the contours of the hillsides overlooking the city. The 100,000 residents can enjoy 250 parks and a series of 150 miles of the Summerlin Trails System that winds through the villages. The community is adjacent to Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountain, offering outstanding recreational opportunities.

This master-planned community grew from 25,000 acres of south Nevada land purchased by the late Howard Hughes, who never actually developed the land. In 1988, the Summa Corporation, heirs to the Hughes fortune, decided to build a planned community and name it after Jean Amelia Summerlin, the paternal grandmother of Hughes.

Summerlin attracts families who want to enjoy the relaxed local lifestyle and array of parks that include golf, tennis, swimming, soccer fields, basketball courts, and baseball diamonds. As a sports-focused, outdoor-oriented community, many luxury homes in Summerlin’s villages are built around the golf courses. Summerlin is also home to TPC Summerlin, one of the most popular golf courses in the country.

Summerlin is a sports-centered community, and residents enjoy watching the MLB’s Las Vegas Aviators play their home games at The Las Vegas Ballpark, which seats up to 10,000 baseball fans. Hockey enthusiasts also search for excitement on the ice at City National Arena, where the Vegas Golden Knights practice. The facility also hosts the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels NCAA Division I hockey team, the Vegas Jesters of the Mountain West Hockey League, and the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights hockey team. Residents can also drive to the T-Mobile Arena to watch the Vegas Golden Knights’ home games or to Allegiant Stadium for a Raiders game.

The community has the first Jack Nicklaus Bear’s Best golf course and the Tournament Players Club for an award-winning, 72-par golf course that was the site of Tiger Woods’ first PGA Tour win. In addition, there are golf courses and clubs for residents to enjoy, including the Arroyo Arnold Palmer golf course at the private Red Rock Canyon Country Club.

Downtown Summerlin is a walkable area with shops, restaurants, healthcare, and other services. While many cities develop around a downtown area, Summerlin’s planned business district was designed to serve all the different villages. The downtown, completed in 2014, includes the hospital and adjacent medical building. It also features a restaurant row with casinos and a shopping area. A Farmer’s Market at the Pavilion is a prominent feature of the downtown area. The community is also rather sports-focused, as Summerlin’s downtown area is also home to two sports complexes for baseball and hockey fans: the Las Vegas Ballpark and City National Arena.

With party decks, comfy mesh seats, and a “home run porch” for catching home run balls, this is a must-visit spot for baseball fans of all ages.
